Father Jailed for Minimum 22 Years After Murdering Premature Infant Daughter
Sean Jefferson, a 35-year-old man from Walsall, has been sentenced to a minimum of 22 years in prison for the murder of his five-week-old daughter, Darcy-Leigh Jefferson. The premature baby suffered extensive injuries, including 47 rib fractures and leg fractures, before succumbing to a catastrophic brain injury on March 29, 2022.
Arrest Footage Reveals Killer's Complaints About Handcuffs
Bodycam footage from Staffordshire Police captured the moment Jefferson was arrested, showing him moaning about his handcuffs being "too tight" as officers detained him. In the video, he can be heard telling police, "That's a bit tight, that is mate. Look at that, see that? That's very tight. Can you please loosen it?"
When officers instructed him to stay still, Jefferson threatened to report them, demanding badge numbers and stating, "I'm putting in a complaint about you. Simple, done. You're hurting my hand, mate." He was told to calm down but continued to protest, adding, "I want your name and badge number, you're abusing your rights now, mate. Simple."
Extreme Violence Led to Infant's Tragic Death
Darcy-Leigh, born five weeks premature, endured repeated assaults throughout her short life. The investigation revealed she sustained dozens of injuries to her head, ribs, and legs, with the fatal blow being a catastrophic brain injury. Jefferson called 999 on March 27, 2022, reporting that his baby had "stopped breathing," but she died two days later in hospital.
The court heard that both parents were using drugs during Darcy-Leigh's life, and neither chose to give evidence in their own defence. A complex investigation by Staffordshire Police's Major Investigations Department, supported by the Crown Prosecution Service, concluded that the head injury was not an isolated act but part of a pattern of violence.
Mother Sentenced for Role in Baby's Death
Amy Clark, 34, the mother from Lichfield, Staffordshire, was jailed for seven years after being found guilty of causing or allowing the infant's death. The sentencing judge attributed her conduct to substance abuse. Clark had sent text messages to Jefferson expressing exhaustion and his lack of support, to which he responded with a threat to "put you 6ft underground" if she harmed the baby through excessive drinking.
Prosecutors dropped charges of murder or manslaughter against Clark towards the end of the trial. She was convicted of two counts of causing or allowing serious harm to a child, in addition to the charge related to the death.
Investigation Uncovers Parental Betrayal
Detective Chief Inspector Ian Fitzgerald, the senior investigating officer, described the parents' behaviour as an "appalling betrayal of parental responsibility." He stated, "Jefferson will now spend a significant part of his life in prison but no sentence can ever reflect the cruelty inflicted on Darcy or repair the devastation left behind."
Jefferson, of Birch Court, Walsall, was also convicted of two counts of causing grievous bodily harm with intent. Both he and Clark had denied multiple charges during the nearly two-month trial, which concluded last month, but the evidence led to their convictions and subsequent sentencing.
