Heroic Police Officer Rescues Three Surfers in Dramatic Byron Bay Incident

A police officer who previously trained as a lifeguard has been hailed as a hero after saving three tourist surfers from near-drowning at a popular holiday destination. The dramatic rescue occurred at Little Wategos Beach near Byron Bay around 6:30pm on Tuesday evening.

Reality Television Connection Revealed

It has now been revealed that the heroic officer, Tommy Frazer, is the brother of Married At First Sight veteran Olivia Frazer. Olivia appeared on Season 9 of the hit reality show in 2022 and recently married her UK personal trainer beau Greg Rutherford in an intimate Sydney ceremony last month.

Olivia previously complained about receiving a 'villain edit' during her time on the show after sharing a story about telling a friend her bridesmaid dresses looked like 'poo', which led to her dismissal from the bridal party. She claimed this portrayal resulted in significant abuse and death threats from some viewers.

Dramatic Rescue Details

According to New South Wales Police statements, officers arrived to find the three French tourists clinging to rocks approximately 100 meters from the beach on the southern side, with waves breaking over the group. Mr. Frazer immediately jumped into the water and assisted two men in swimming back to shore, where they received treatment from paramedics.

In a remarkable display of courage, Mr. Frazer then returned to the water to secure the third surfer, who had lost consciousness. He secured the unconscious man to a jetski and held him steady as they were towed back to shore. The third surfer was transported to Lismore Base Hospital in serious but stable condition and is expected to make a full recovery.

Mr. Frazer sustained minor injuries during the rescue but did not require hospital treatment himself.

Previous Lifeguard Experience

Tommy Frazer is no stranger to water rescues, having previously served as a trainee lifeguard at Bondi Beach and appearing on the television show Bondi Rescue in 2021. In a video shared that October, Mr. Frazer was seen rescuing three people struggling against a rip current.

Reflecting on his trainee experience at the time, Mr. Frazer said: 'Being a trainee, you've got to prove yourself. The swell was big. You semi-want to do rescues just to show the boys you've got what it takes.'

Official Praise and Recognition

Following Tuesday's heroic rescue, Minister for Police and Counter-terrorism Yasmin Catley publicly praised Mr. Frazer's actions. 'The police officer involved in yesterday's rescue showed real courage, putting his own safety at risk in difficult conditions to bring three men to safety,' she stated.

The Minister continued: 'It could have ended very differently, but because of his actions, three people are alive today. This is what our police do, often without recognition, always putting the safety of others ahead of their own.'

She added: 'Our officers are among the best trained in the world, but it's their character and their instinct to act, that makes the real difference in moments like this. I want to acknowledge this officer's remarkable bravery and thank him for his service.'

Family Celebrations

Meanwhile, Olivia Frazer recently shared details of her whirlwind romance with new husband Greg Rutherford. The couple met at the beginning of September, with Greg proposing in a private garden at Newton Hall in North East England. Olivia told Daily Mail: 'Both Greg, myself and our families are over the moon.'

The couple publicly announced their relationship online in October, just one month after meeting, marking a happy chapter for the Frazer family alongside Tommy's heroic achievements.
