A new Channel 4 romantic drama titled Falling, featuring acclaimed actors Keeley Hawes and Paapa Essiedu, has officially announced its premiere date. The series, penned by Adolescence writer Jack Thorne, will air its first two episodes on Tuesday 19 May and Wednesday 20 May at 9pm.
Plot and Characters
The six-part series centres on Anna, a dedicated nun, and David, a Catholic priest, who unexpectedly develop romantic feelings for each other. Both characters are wholly devoted to their ecclesiastical duties and their parish, forcing them to grapple with what these emotions signify for their vocations, their sacred vows, and their faith in God.
Channel 4 teased the show as "a witty, moving, contemporary romantic drama that is as honest as it is full of heart."
Cast and Creative Team
Alongside Hawes and Essiedu, the cast includes Rakie Ayola, Jason Watkins, Niamh Cusack, Adrian Scarborough, David Dawson, Susan Brown, and Sandra Voe. The series is directed by Peter Hoar, known for his work on It's a Sin.
Hawes expressed her excitement, saying: "I'm thrilled to be taking on the role of Anna and so looking forward to working alongside the brilliant Paapa Essiedu to bring Jack Thorne's beautiful scripts to life."
Essiedu added: "Falling is a story that has Jack Thorne's singular talent of mining the sublime out of the ordinary running all the way through."
Thorne himself noted: "I never thought I'd write a love story, but I am very excited to be making one with the brilliant Peter Hoar."
Viewer Anticipation
After Channel 4 released a first-look trailer, viewers expressed their excitement on social media. One wrote: "Fascinating story, definitely going to watch this." Another commented: "Anything with Keeley Hawes is always great! Love her."
Gwawr Lloyd, Channel 4 commissioning editor of drama, stated: "The combination of Keeley Hawes and Paapa Essiedu, alongside Jack Thorne's incredible scripts and Peter Hoar's direction means this will be the most extraordinary show."
Falling airs on Channel 4 on Tuesday 19 May at 9pm.
