Police Release CCTV Image in Gloucester Sexual Assault Investigation
Gloucestershire Police have issued a public appeal and released a CCTV image of a male they urgently wish to speak with following a serious sexual assault on a teenage girl in Gloucester city centre. The incident, which occurred on the evening of January 7, has prompted a detailed investigation as officers seek to identify the individual captured on camera.
Details of the Assault on Westgate Street
The victim, a 17-year-old girl, reported that she was sexually assaulted on Westgate Street, close to the prominent McDonald's restaurant. According to the police statement, the girl had initially recognised the male and approached him to exchange pleasantries. However, the situation escalated alarmingly when the male pulled her into a shop doorway.
Once in the doorway, the male held the girl in a tight hug before attempting to kiss her without consent. The assault intensified as he then grabbed her body beneath her clothing and placed his hand under her underwear. The victim managed to remove his hand and told him to stop, with a group of nearby males also intervening to demand he cease his actions. Following this intervention, the girl was able to leave the scene safely with her own group of friends.
Police Investigation and Public Appeal
The incident is reported to have taken place between 7pm and 8pm on Wednesday, January 7. Gloucestershire Police have confirmed they are investigating a report that a male touched the 17-year-old girl beneath her clothing without her consent. After conducting a number of enquiries, investigators have now released the CCTV image in the hope that members of the public can assist in identifying the male.
Police describe the individual they wish to speak with as believed to be aged around 17 or 18 years old. The girl did not know the male prior to the assault. Authorities are urging anyone who recognises the person in the image, or who has any information whatsoever about the sexual assault, to come forward immediately.
How to Provide Information to Police
Gloucestershire Police have provided specific contact details for anyone with relevant information. The public is asked to contact police either through the official police website or by calling 101. When making contact, individuals should quote incident reference number 298 of January 8 to ensure information reaches the correct investigation team promptly.
This appeal forms a crucial part of the ongoing investigation as officers work to bring the perpetrator to justice and provide support to the young victim. The release of the CCTV image represents a significant step in the investigative process, with police relying on community assistance to progress the case.
