Five-Year-Old Boy Faces Life-Long Scarring After Dog Attack in Doncaster Park
Boy, 5, scarred for life in Doncaster dog attack

A young boy faces the prospect of permanent scarring after a terrifying dog attack in a South Yorkshire park, which has led to a man's arrest and reignited the debate on responsible pet ownership.

Details of the Park Attack

The incident occurred on Thursday in a park off Schofield Street in Mexborough, Doncaster. According to South Yorkshire Police, the dog, believed to be a bull breed that was off its lead, aggressively approached the five-year-old child.

The animal then began mauling the boy's face in front of his horrified mother. The attack resulted in significant injuries to the child's eye, ears, and cheeks.

Police Response and Investigation

Officers responded immediately to the scene. They seized the dog, which now remains in police kennels.

A 29-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of owning a dog dangerously out of control. He has since been released on police bail while enquiries continue.

The injured boy was rushed to hospital for treatment. Medical professionals believe his injuries are severe enough that they could cause lasting physical scars.

A Call for Responsible Ownership

Inspector Steve Usher issued a stark warning following the attack. He stated that this was an incident that should never have happened and could have been avoided through responsible ownership.

‘If you are in an area with children who can act in excitable and unpredictable ways, there should be no reason a dog should be off its lead,’ Inspector Usher said.

He emphasised that being a responsible owner is what prevents dogs from causing fear and harm in the community, urging the public: ‘Please do your part and act. Do not think it won't happen to you, or your dog would never do that. Any dog has the potential to cause injury.’
