Woman's Body Discovered After Two Weeks, Homicide Investigation Initiated

Police have identified a woman found dead inside a residence in Bellbird Park, with authorities revealing her body may have been left undiscovered for up to two weeks. The grim discovery has prompted a homicide investigation as detectives piece together the circumstances surrounding her death.

Discovery and Identification

Officers were called to Beryl Court at Bellbird Park, near Ipswich west of Brisbane, last Thursday morning following reports of a disturbance in the street. At the scene, a man was arrested. Further inquiries led police to a nearby home two hours later, where they made the tragic discovery of a woman's body inside.

The deceased has since been identified as Katherine Sanowski, a 42-year-old woman from Springfield. Police announced on Tuesday that a homicide investigation had been launched after receiving autopsy results that revealed suspicious elements regarding her injuries.

Detective Inspector Michael Manago stated: 'We've conducted a post-mortem, which has identified some suspicious elements in regards to this death, and as such, we're treating it as a homicide investigation. Our investigations suggest that the deceased had been in that dwelling for about two weeks, backdating to early February.'

Arrest and Investigation Details

A 34-year-old Bellbird Park man taken into custody at the time remains in hospital undergoing a medical assessment. He has yet to speak with detectives, and no charges have been laid. Detective Inspector Manago confirmed that the man in custody and Ms Sanowski were known to each other, and authorities do not believe at this stage that anyone else was involved in her death.

'The dynamics of their relationship remain a key topic of our investigation today,' he added. 'There's no previous reports of domestic violence between the parties involved. Their previous history is subject to continued investigations. We don't believe there's anyone else involved, however we're keeping an open mind.'

Background and Community Impact

Ms Sanowski had not been reported missing in the days leading up to her body being found and did not live at the Bellbird Park address. According to her social media, she graduated from Griffith University in June 2024 and suggested at the time that she was making a fresh start. Two months later, she appealed for advice on a Springfield community Facebook page, writing: 'Anyone know of any community groups, support groups in the area and/or events happening tonight/over the weekend? Going through tough times and looking to make some friends.'

Neighbours in the quiet street expressed shock at the incident. One man told the Courier Mail: 'Nothing really goes on here. Everyone's really good with each other. It's not really a place where everyone's yelling and screaming at each other.'

Police Appeal for Information

Detective Inspector Manago emphasized that there are no concerns for public safety regarding the incident but appealed for witnesses. 'I want to stress to everyone that there are no concerns for public safety, in regards to what's transpired at that location, and also want to appeal to anyone that was in the vicinity of Beryl Court at Bellbird during the early period of February, 2026. Anyone who witnessed anything in Beryl Court or may have relevant CCTV is urged to come forward.'

The investigation continues as police work to determine the full timeline and circumstances of Ms Sanowski's death, with forensic teams and detectives actively pursuing all leads in this developing case.
