A Birmingham woman has been convicted of plotting to assassinate her former partner while disguising herself in a niqab to evade recognition. Aimee Betro, 31, was found guilty at Birmingham Crown Court after a jury heard how she meticulously planned the killing.
The Chilling Plot
Betro allegedly recruited another individual to carry out the murder, providing them with detailed instructions and even scouting locations for the attack. Prosecutors revealed that she had worn a niqab—a full-face veil—to conceal her identity while conducting reconnaissance.
Evidence Presented in Court
The prosecution presented text messages and CCTV footage showing Betro near the victim's residence. Witnesses testified that she had expressed a desire to "end his life" following their tumultuous breakup.
Defence Arguments
Betro's defence team argued that her actions were exaggerated and that she had no genuine intent to commit murder. However, the jury dismissed these claims, delivering a unanimous guilty verdict.
Sentencing and Reactions
Judge Sarah Buckingham described the case as "deeply disturbing" and remanded Betro in custody ahead of sentencing. The victim, who cannot be named for legal reasons, expressed relief at the verdict but remains under police protection.
Detective Inspector Mark Walters, who led the investigation, praised the efforts of the team in uncovering the plot. "This was a calculated and sinister plan," he said. "Thankfully, we were able to intervene before any harm was done."
