An elderly cat met a tragic end after an Amazon delivery driver allegedly abducted him from his home's driveway. Sidney, a 16-year-old tabby, was taken by the driver while delivering a package to Marsha Reeves's residence in Kansas City, Missouri, on Monday evening.
Catnapping Caught on Camera
Reeves, who had Sidney since he was a kitten, noticed her beloved pet had vanished. Checking a neighbor's doorbell camera, she was horrified to see the driver pick up Sidney and place him in her van. 'But if you look closely, you can see her get out of her van and pick him up,' Reeves told Fox 4 Kansas City.
Reeves explained that Sidney's friendly nature may have contributed to his kidnapping. 'He would always hang out on my deck. He was very much a people cat,' she said. Sidney was frail and in the final stages of his life, requiring special food and medication for comfort.
A Frantic Search
The driver took Sidney to multiple animal shelters before finally dropping him off at KC Pet Project. Staff there, noting his frailty, euthanized him in a clinical room before his family could be reunited. 'We called all of the animal hospitals within a 10-mile radius…and found out that this girl had taken him to Grandview Animal Hospital on Tuesday, the day after she catnapped him,' Reeves said. The hospital directed her to Wayside Waifs, then Belton Animal Control, and finally KC Pet Project, where the vet decided euthanasia was best.
'I cannot even imagine what he was thinking,' Reeves told Fox 4 Kansas City. Sidney was on his last leg of life, and the family was preparing for his death. Reeves has had the pet since he was born.
Accountability Sought
Reeves wants Amazon to reprimand the driver. 'I think Amazon needs to be held accountable,' she said. 'He did not deserve to die on a metal table with strangers poking him; he should have been at home in my arms when he took his last breath.'
The family has filed a report with the Kansas City Police Department and hopes Amazon will take action. 'She needs to come with a supervisor and face me and my family members, who this has affected,' Reeves added. Amazon told the Daily Mail: 'We’re looking into it.'
