A poignant memorial service was held in London today to mark the 30th anniversary of the IRA Docklands bomb, with two white doves symbolically released to honour the two men killed in the horrific attack. The ceremony took place close to the site where Inam Bashir and John Jeffries lost their lives on February 9, 1996, under the Docklands Light Railway at South Quay.
Commemorating Lives Lost to Terrorism
Organiser Jonathan Ganesh, a survivor of the blast, explained that the doves represented not only his friends Inam and JJ but all victims of terror attacks globally. The multi-faith service, attended by nearly 50 people, included a minute's silence perfectly observed, with the DLR joining in the tribute. Ganesh's Docklands Victims Association created special dove lapel badges, which he distributed to attendees as a lasting memento.
Survivor's Ongoing Fight for Justice
Ganesh, who was 23 and working as a part-time security guard on the night of the bombing, recalled walking past the lorry laden with the bomb shortly before it detonated. He emphasised that the fight for justice continues, stating, "Thirty years on and there are still questions unanswered." He expressed frustration over a redacted report by William Shawcross and alleged government cover-ups, adding, "Almost one third of a century on and we are still being denied the truth."
Ganesh is one of three individuals bringing a civil action against Sinn Fein leader Gerry Adams, holding him personally responsible for IRA bombs in London, with symbolic damages of £1 sought. Adams has consistently denied IRA membership.
Dignitaries and Messages of Resilience
London's deputy mayor, Joanne McCartney, was among the dignitaries present, declaring, "The attack attempted to spread fear - it failed." The service underscored the community's resilience and the enduring memory of those affected by terrorism, with Ganesh noting, "We remember all those who lose their lives due to terrorism. My friends Inam and JJ were well known and well liked. Their lives were taken in a horrific act."
