Donald Trump has congratulated Rory McIlroy on his second Masters title, describing the Northern Irishman as a “legend” on his Truth Social platform. McIlroy held on for a one-shot victory over world No 1 Scottie Scheffler, becoming the fourth player in the tournament’s history to win consecutive titles at Augusta.
Trump, who has played golf with McIlroy in the past, wrote: “Congratulations to Rory McIlroy on another Great Championship, The Masters! He performed tremendously under intense pressure, something which few people would be able to even think about doing. With each year, Rory is becoming more and more a LEGEND!”
The victory was McIlroy’s sixth major, drawing him level with Nick Faldo and placing him one ahead of Seve Ballesteros. Next on the all-time list are Harry Vardon, Gene Sarazen, Bobby Jones, Sam Snead and Arnold Palmer, all with seven titles.
Trump also looked ahead to the Cadillac Championship, scheduled to be played at Trump National Doral in Miami later this month. “I look forward to watching him compete in two weeks at Doral,” Trump added. “The quality of Professional Golfers today has become extraordinary.”
