Ellis Heather, 25, has been sentenced to life imprisonment with a minimum term of 28 years for the murder of Stephen Morrison, 30, who was stabbed to death during a music video shoot in Epping, Essex, in June 2020. The victim, known as Zero Ls, was a content creator who approached the filming location, which featured big snakes and a Komodo dragon, and was attacked after irritating the crew.
Details of the Attack
The incident occurred on June 23, 2020, in a car park near the Wake Arms roundabout in Epping. Stephen Morrison was stabbed without justification in a moment of extreme violence, according to His Honour Judge Lickley KC, who presided over the sentencing at the Old Bailey on Friday, July 17, 2026. Heather, formerly of Maidenhead, was convicted of murder following a five-week trial. The judge stated that Heather was armed with a knife and used it to deadly effect, then abandoned the victim at the scene.
Impact on the Victim's Family
Stephen Morrison's mother, Lorraine, delivered a victim impact statement, saying: "Steve was a son, a brother, a dad and an uncle. Every day we try to keep his memory alive so that his young son, nieces and nephews never forget him, because memories are all we now have left. The babies born after his death have been robbed of the chance to know their amazing uncle, because of you (Heather)." She added that the family places a photograph where Steve would have sat at events to include him. Stephen was described as happy, funny, and larger than life, leaving an enormous hole in the family.
Investigation and Evidence
The investigation spanned over six years, involving the scrutiny of more than 200 hours of CCTV footage and the examination of over 1,000 pieces of evidence, including 50 mobile phones. Detective Chief Inspector Greg Wood said: "Today's sentence marks the conclusion of a long and difficult journey towards justice for Stephen and his family. For more than six years, his loved ones have lived with the unimaginable pain of losing Stephen while patiently waiting for those responsible to be held accountable." He praised the strength of the family and the dedication of officers, stating that the passage of time never diminished their determination to find answers.
Heather's Behavior Post-Crime
The judge noted that Heather bragged about his actions in a music video and taunted Stephen's family after the killing. Heather's sentencing concludes a six-year probe, with police confirming that he had been armed with a knife and used it in a savage attack. The motive appeared to be that Morrison disrupted the music video shoot by trying to get involved, leading to the fatal stabbing.
Stephen Morrison managed to flee the scene and seek assistance but later died in hospital from his wounds. The case highlights the dangers of violence erupting during public events, with the court emphasizing the unprovoked nature of the attack.
