The man accused of orchestrating a bomb hoax that forced the evacuation of a Peter Kay comedy show in Birmingham has been removed from a magistrates' court after a series of outbursts during his bail hearing.
Courtroom Disruption
Omar Majed, 19, from Saltley, Birmingham, was taken from the courtroom after shouting that the proposed bail conditions were "not acceptable." District Judge Michelle Smith repeatedly asked him to remain quiet and seated, but he refused to comply. He was eventually led away to the cells before the hearing concluded.
Majed faces a single charge of communicating false information to police, contrary to the Criminal Law Act. He did not indicate a plea during the hearing. His case has been adjourned until 1 June, when he is due to appear at Birmingham Crown Court. Judge Smith also refused a bail application following submissions from the prosecution and defence lawyer Lauren Clark.
The Incident
The incident occurred on Saturday evening at the Utilita Arena in Birmingham, where Peter Kay was performing in front of nearly 13,000 fans. The comedian was reportedly "bundled off stage" after a suspicious bag was discovered. West Midlands Police evacuated the venue and conducted a thorough search, later confirming that "nothing suspicious was found."
Audience members reported receiving no explanation during the evacuation. A member of the production team went on stage at around 8.45pm to inform the crowd that the show would not continue. Majed is alleged to have "barged" his way into the arena without a ticket and indicated to a police constable and others that a bomb may have been left at the venue.
What Happens Next
Majed remains in custody pending his next court appearance. The case has drawn significant attention due to the high-profile nature of the event and the disruption caused to thousands of fans. Peter Kay has not publicly commented on the incident.
