A magician who charged a community centre £400 for a show he never attended has apologised, claiming he is working to refund everyone. Dean Spruce, who operates Divine Magic, approached Crossens Community Centre in Southport in April, offering entertainment for their summer fair in June. The deal included a magic show, bubble show, workshops, walkround magic and balloons, all for £400.
Fiona Townsend, vice chair of the community association, said they thought the offer was “amazing” and paid the full amount. On the day of the fair, Spruce messaged to say his brother had died and he needed to return to Scotland. Five months later, the association is still waiting for a full refund, having received only £100.
It is understood that Spruce has taken money from other centres across the country. Reports from Scotland indicate he previously made excuses such as car accidents, Covid and broken ribs to avoid commitments, while attending other events that were double-booked. These incidents are believed to have occurred around three years ago.
In a statement, Spruce said: “I’m sorry for what has happened and Crossens will have been refunded £200 by the time of this article. I am working hard to refund everyone. I have been in contact with the affected groups and I’m sorry it happened as this year has been hard and I had similar issues three years ago too. I could have handled it better.” He encouraged anyone affected to email him. The police have not been informed.
