A Swindon man caught with a machete and a significant quantity of Class A drugs has been sentenced to 35 months in prison. Jay Lucas, 23, of Darnley Close, Walcot, admitted to playing a significant role in the supply of heroin and crack cocaine in the Wiltshire town.
Lucas pleaded guilty to four offences at Swindon Crown Court on Friday, including being concerned in the supply of crack cocaine, heroin, and cannabis, as well as possessing a machete in a public place. The court heard that in October 2019, he was caught with the machete and cannabis.
On 18 December 2021, police apprehended Lucas at an address in Whitbourne Avenue, where he attempted to discard a package containing 49 individual wraps of Class A drugs. A subsequent search of the property uncovered a rucksack belonging to Lucas containing crack cocaine and heroin. Officers also seized nearly £600 in cash and two mobile phones.
Analysis of the phones revealed Lucas had been involved in drug supply in the area since May 2020. PC Craig Head, from Wiltshire Police's Operation Fortitude unit, said the confiscated drugs could have caused 'significant harm to our communities'. He added that Lucas 'played a significant role in supplying Class A drugs to vulnerable users in Swindon'.
