A 25-year-old British tourist is facing life imprisonment in Thailand after being arrested with more than a kilogram of cocaine, worth £68,000, in his Bangkok hotel room. Thai narcotics officers conducted a sting operation after tracing a suspicious parcel sent through international mail.
Authorities allege the man arranged for the drugs to be delivered to a luxury condominium in the city centre. Staff refused the delivery due to an incomplete address, prompting the Office of the Narcotics Control Board (ONCB) to intervene. When the suspect arrived to collect the package, undercover officers arrested him. A subsequent search of his room uncovered additional marijuana.
Police Lieutenant Colonel Suriya Lekathikan, Secretary-General of the ONCB, stated: 'Right now, our officers are conducting an in-depth investigation into this drug trafficking network involving foreign nationals. For this reason, we are not able to disclose the suspect's personal information or further details at this stage.' He added: 'Anyone else connected to him, who has been involved in the smuggling network, should be fearful. We are closing in on them.'
The seized drugs are believed to have been destined for tourists and expats in Bangkok's party venues and bars. The ONCB said in a statement: 'This cocaine seizure demonstrates the efforts of transnational networks to import club drugs, which are highly potent and popular in entertainment venues, into the country.'
The Briton has been charged with importing Category II narcotics with intent to sell. Under Thai law, cocaine falls into this category, and offenders can face decades behind bars or life imprisonment depending on the quantity. The arrest follows that of another British tourist, George Wilson, 23, who was detained for allegedly attempting to smuggle more than nine kilograms of crystal meth and now faces the death penalty.
