Tragedy Strikes Queensland Family in Devastating Crash
A community in remote Queensland is in mourning after a catastrophic car crash claimed the lives of a 30-year-old mother and her 10-year-old daughter. The devastating incident occurred in the early hours of Friday morning in Doomadgee, approximately 400km north of Mount Isa in western Queensland.
The woman was travelling in a white 2006 Toyota LandCruiser with her four children when the vehicle rolled. Tragically, the mother died at the scene. Her 10-year-old daughter was rushed to Doomadgee Hospital but could not be saved.
Young Children Injured in Devastating Collision
The three other children inside the vehicle, all under the age of five, sustained injuries in the crash. A three-year-old girl remains in a critical condition in hospital. Her one-year-old brother's condition has stabilised after initially being listed as critical. A four-year-old child suffered minor injuries.
Acting Superintendent Paul Austin described the crash as 'catastrophic' for the small, tight-knit community. 'Certainly the grief that's been experienced as a result of this incident has been extreme,' he said on Sunday.
Man Known to Family Arrested as Investigation Continues
Police have confirmed that a 28-year-old man has been taken into custody in relation to the fatal crash. The man, who was in a relationship with the deceased mother and was a parent and stepfather to her children, was travelling in a separate vehicle at the time – a black 2011 Nissan Maxima.
Both vehicles have been seized and transported to Mount Isa for forensic examination. While no charges have been laid at this stage, the man remains in police custody with plans to move him to Townsville.
Superintendent Austin stated that domestic violence would form part of the ongoing investigation, alongside inquiries into whether speed, alcohol or drug use were contributing factors. 'We're looking at everything,' he confirmed. 'The investigation must be methodical and comprehensive.'
Police have released confronting images of both vehicles involved in the hopes that witnesses will come forward. They are appealing to anyone who may have seen the vehicles in the days or hours before the crash, or had interactions with their occupants, to contact Doomadgee or Mount Isa Police.
