The chilling 999 call made by England hockey international Sam Way moments after he fatally stabbed his wife has been revealed in court, exposing his desperate attempts to cover up the brutal murder.
Way, a former sports star, could be heard telling emergency operators: "My wife's got a knife in her tummy" in a recording played to Reading Crown Court. The 40-year-old claimed his 39-year-old wife, Sarah, had stabbed herself during an argument at their Berkshire home.
The Shameful Smear Campaign
During the trial, prosecutors revealed how Way attempted to portray his wife as an "unstable alcoholic" who had inflicted the fatal wound upon herself. This narrative quickly unraveled under police scrutiny.
Detective Chief Inspector Andy Howard stated: "Way immediately tried to lay the blame on Sarah, claiming she was responsible for her own death. This was a shameful attempt to smear a vulnerable woman who could no longer defend herself."
A Life Cut Short
Sarah Way, described by friends as a "vibrant and loving" woman, suffered a single stab wound to the abdomen during the altercation on September 12 last year. Despite emergency services rushing to the scene, she was pronounced dead shortly after arrival at hospital.
Neighbours expressed shock at the tragedy, describing the couple as seeming "perfectly normal" and the incident as "completely out of character."
The Truth Emerges
Forensic evidence and the nature of Sarah's injuries quickly contradicted Way's version of events. The court heard how the position and depth of the wound made it impossible for her to have self-inflicted the fatal injury.
Way, who represented England in hockey between 2005 and 2012, eventually pleaded guilty to murder after the overwhelming evidence against him became clear.
A Sporting Star's Fall from Grace
The case has sent shockwaves through the hockey community, where Way was once regarded as a rising star. Former teammates expressed their devastation at both the loss of Sarah and Way's actions.
One former colleague, who wished to remain anonymous, said: "We're all completely stunned. This isn't the Sam we knew, but nothing can excuse what he's done."
Way remains in custody awaiting sentencing, facing a mandatory life term for his crime.
