A man is in a serious condition in hospital after his car was involved in a crash which saw a police armed response vehicle flip onto its side. Shortly before 7.30pm on Wednesday June 17, a Merseyside Police armed response Volvo was responding to an emergency incident when it was involved in a collision with a black Ford Fiesta at the junction of Mather Avenue and Greenhill Road in Allerton.
Injuries and Response
The driver of the Ford, a man in his 70s, was taken to hospital for treatment. Fire crews and paramedics also attended the scene, with a rescue team removing the roof of the Ford after the crash. It has since been confirmed the man suffered serious injuries and is in hospital in a stable condition, with a spokesperson for the force stating he is believed to have suffered potentially life-changing injuries.
Crash Details
As a result of the crash, the marked Volvo was left on its side, while a lamppost was also broken in two during the collision. Following the crash, the police force made a mandatory referral to the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC). The armed response vehicle is understood to have been travelling to Newsham Park where it was reported a 16-year-old boy was chased by a gang with a weapon. The teenager was found by officers and, following a search of the area, no suspects were located.
Witness Account
One witness told the ECHO how passers-by rushed to help both the driver of the Ford and the police officers immediately after the crash. He said: "Pedestrians rushed to help pull a police officer out of the car on its side and assist the driver in the other car. Within minutes ambulances arrived, a few fire engines and more police to the scene and to close off Mather Avenue on the dual carriageway between Burnham Road and Tesco."
Road Closures and Appeal
The northbound carriageway of Mather Avenue between Storrsdale Road and Rose Lane was closed for a period of time while the two cars were recovered from the scene.
