Superdry co-founder James Holder has been found guilty of rape following a night out drinking, and now faces a potential prison sentence. The 54-year-old multi-millionaire fashion boss had returned to the woman's home after an evening of drinking, where he went to the toilet and subsequently fell asleep on her bed, snoring loudly.
Later waking up, Holder beckoned the woman, who was attempting to sleep in the lounge, into her bedroom and proceeded to rape her. He had denied charges of both assault by penetration and rape, claiming that any sexual activity that occurred was consensual.
However, a jury at Gloucester Crown Court, sitting in Cirencester, acquitted Holder of assault by penetration but found him guilty of rape. The verdict marks a significant development in the case, which has drawn considerable attention due to Holder's high-profile status as co-founder of the popular clothing brand Superdry.
Details of the Case
The incident took place after a night out drinking, during which Holder accompanied the woman back to her residence. According to court proceedings, Holder used the toilet and then fell asleep on her bed. When he awoke, he called the woman into the bedroom and committed the rape.
Holder's defense argued that the sexual encounter was consensual, but the jury rejected this claim in relation to the rape charge. The court acquitted him of the separate charge of assault by penetration.
Legal Consequences
Holder now faces sentencing, with the possibility of a custodial sentence. The judge has not yet set a date for sentencing, but it is expected to occur in the coming weeks. This case highlights the serious consequences of sexual assault and the importance of the justice system in holding offenders accountable.
