Sunderland glass bottle attack: man charged with wounding

Ian Hume, 38, of Tunstall Road in Sunderland, has been charged with wounding with intent and possession of an offensive weapon in a public place following an alleged glass bottle attack in Sunderland city centre. The incident is said to have occurred at around 1:50 am on Thursday, July 16, in the Park Lane area.

Victim suffered serious facial injuries

The victim, a man in his 50s, sustained serious facial injuries consistent with being struck by a glass bottle, according to a Northumbria Police spokesperson. He was taken to hospital for treatment. Police cordoned off part of Park Lane for several hours after the attack.

Court appearance and remand

Hume appeared at North Tyneside Magistrates' Court on Friday, July 17, where he was remanded in custody. He is scheduled to appear at Newcastle Crown Court on August 14. The charges include wounding with intent and possession of an offensive weapon in a public place.

Police appeal for information

Northumbria Police are urging anyone with information about the incident to contact them online via the force website or by calling 101, quoting reference number NP-20260716-0093. A man in his 30s was arrested on suspicion of causing grievous bodily harm with intent shortly after the attack and remains in police custody.
