Murder Investigation Underway in Newport City Centre
A main route in Newport city centre has been closed due to a murder investigation following the death of a woman. Gwent Police officers, including specially trained firearms officers, attended a report of an altercation outside a property in St Vincent Road, Newport, in the early hours of Saturday 18 July 2026.
The woman died at the scene, and a 66-year-old man from Newport has been arrested on suspicion of murder. He is currently in police custody. The incident remains ongoing, and a police cordon is in place.
Police Appeal for Witnesses and Footage
A Gwent Police spokesman said: "We're appealing for information following the death of a woman in Newport. Officers, including specially trained firearms officers, attended a report of an altercation outside a property in St Vincent Road, Newport, in the early hours of Saturday 18 July. A 66-year-old man from Newport, is currently in police custody after being arrested on suspicion of murder."
Police are particularly keen to hear from anyone with information, including CCTV or dashcam footage captured between 1am and 3am on Saturday 18 July. Local Councillor Advises Road Closures
Newport city councillor Farzina Hussain, representing the Victoria Ward, posted about the "major police incident." She wrote: "Please be aware that St Vincent Road is currently closed at both ends, from Rodney Road and Corporation Road due to a major police incident. There is no access through Corporation Road onto Clarence Place so please avoid the area and use an alternative route if possible. The road is expected to remain closed for some time while emergency services deal with the incident."
Forensic Teams at the Scene
Forensic teams were spotted on St Vincent Road at around 11:38 am, according to local resident Lewis Mines, who provided a picture of officers in white suits. As of 12:47 pm, a police presence remained on the street. Traffic in the area, including along Clarence Place, has been slow, with Google Maps showing congestion on Carleon Road.
Gwent Police has not confirmed the exact location of the incident or whether multiple areas are affected as part of the same investigation. St Vincent Road is approximately 0.2 miles (a three-minute walk) from Clarence Place.
