Eight in Critical Condition After Bedfordshire Train Collision

Eight individuals remain in critical condition and 53 are still hospitalised following a train crash in Bedfordshire on Friday, June 19. The collision involving two East Midlands Railway trains near Elstow triggered a major incident, with over 100 people taken to hospital. British Transport Police (BTP) confirmed the latest figures on Monday, noting they are "likely to continue to change" as the situation develops.

Driver Killed in Crash

The driver of one of the trains, 60-year-old Shaun Burton, died in the collision. In a statement released through police, his family said: "We are devastated by his loss. Our thoughts are also with those affected by this incident." Dave Calfe, general secretary of train driver union Aslef, told the BBC: "We are all heartbroken by the death of Shaun Burton, which leaves a hole in the lives of his family, friends and colleagues that will never be filled."

Emergency Response and Investigation

Police received the emergency call shortly after 5.15pm on Friday. Officers from BTP, Bedfordshire Police, the National Police Air Service, and local fire and ambulance services responded. Deputy Chief Constable Stuart Cundy of BTP said: "First and foremost, the thoughts of everyone at BTP are with the driver Shaun Burton's family and colleagues, and all those injured and affected by the collision on Friday." He added that the investigation is a "priority" for BTP, working with the Rail Accident Investigation Branch to establish the circumstances. Personal items have been recovered from the trains.

Recovery Operation Underway

DCC Cundy praised the response: "Friday evening witnessed an awful incident that presented complexities and challenges for all those who responded. I have been humbled by the actions of passengers and staff who were on the trains, and by the professionalism of our officers, the wider emergency services and partners." The recovery operation is ongoing, with work continuing this week to remove damaged trains and carriages and reopen the railway. Those affected are urged to contact BTP.
