Former British immigration official Peter Wai and retired Hong Kong police officer Bill Yuen have been jailed for spying for China, conducting what prosecutors described as 'shadow policing' operations on Hong Kong pro-democracy protesters living in the United Kingdom.
Details of the Case
Peter Wai, 41, abused his position to gather intelligence on targets and was instructed to pay 'special attention' to British politicians. He acted on the orders of his handler Bill Yuen, 66, a former Hong Kong police officer. The dual Chinese-British nationals were arrested after a failed attempt to snatch Monica Kwong, a £16 million fraud suspect, from her flat in Pontefret, West Yorkshire.
Trial and Conviction
Following a two-month trial at the Old Bailey, the pair were convicted of assisting a foreign intelligence service under the National Security Act. The court heard that Wai and Yuen conducted covert operations targeting Hong Kong pro-democracy activists in the UK, effectively acting as an extension of Chinese state security.
