Cold Case Murder Suspect Arrested After 22 Years

Suspect Apprehended in Decades-Old Homicide Case

In a significant breakthrough for a long-dormant investigation, authorities in Riverside County have made an arrest in a cold case murder that dates back nearly twenty-two years. Corey Sampson, a 45-year-old resident of Hesperia, was taken into custody on March 19, 2026, and now faces murder charges for the 2004 killing of 29-year-old Israel Rangel, as confirmed by the Riverside County Sheriff’s Office.

Details of the Original Incident

The tragic event unfolded on September 1, 2004, when deputies were dispatched to reports of a shooting shortly before 11:30 p.m. in the 15000 block of Perris Boulevard, located in Moreno Valley. Upon arrival, law enforcement discovered Rangel suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. He was swiftly transported to a nearby hospital but succumbed to his injuries, marking the beginning of a prolonged and challenging investigation.

Investigation Stalled and Later Reopened

Initially, an extensive inquiry led investigators to identify Sampson as a suspect in the murder. However, at that time, there was insufficient evidence to proceed with formal charges, causing the case to eventually go cold, according to official statements from the sheriff’s office. For years, the investigation remained inactive until it was recently revived as part of the department’s systematic review of unsolved homicides.

"As part of the Sheriff’s Office’s ongoing efforts to review unsolved homicide cases, investigators recently reexamined this case," the department explained. "During the review, several leads and follow-up tasks were identified, and the case was reopened."

New Leads Lead to Arrest

The renewed investigative effort proved fruitful, uncovering fresh leads that enabled detectives to construct a stronger case. Through diligent work, authorities amassed sufficient evidence to support Sampson’s arrest. On March 19, 2026, with assistance from the Riverside County District Attorney’s Gang Impact Team, Sampson was apprehended without incident in Hesperia.

At this stage, investigators have not disclosed a possible motive or any details regarding a potential connection between Sampson and Rangel. The case remains under active investigation, and officials are urging anyone with information to come forward. Currently, Sampson is being held at the Larry D. Smith Correctional Facility in Riverside County, awaiting further legal proceedings. This arrest highlights the persistent efforts of law enforcement to bring closure to cold cases and deliver justice for victims and their families.
