Rainbow Bridge in Texas Reopens After $10.9M Revamp, Easing Driver Fears
Texas' Scariest Bridge Reopens After $10.9M Revamp

The Rainbow Bridge in Texas, often called one of the "scariest" bridges in the southern United States, has reopened after a major $10.9 million (approximately £8.03 million) renovation, providing significant relief for drivers. The cantilever bridge spans the Neches River in southeast Texas, connecting Port Arthur and Bridge City.

Steep Incline and Design

The bridge is known for its steep incline, which appears particularly striking from certain angles. This is due to its unusually high arch, designed to accommodate large ships that regularly navigate the Neches River. The bridge has a vertical clearance of 177 feet, providing ample space for vessels to pass underneath. Combined with narrow lanes, the drive across the water between Jefferson and Orange counties can be dramatic.

Renovation Details

The bridge was closed in March 2025 for extensive maintenance. The Texas Department of Transportation awarded a $10.9 million contract to Southern Road and Bridge, a Florida-based contractor. Work included a full-depth concrete deck restoration, repairs to steel railing, and replacement of 1,200 rivets and four steel member pins, as reported by 12 News Now.

During the closure, drivers were rerouted to the nearby Veterans Memorial Bridge, which normally handles eastbound traffic only but was temporarily adapted to manage the altered traffic patterns.

Reopening and History

The Texas Department of Transportation announced the completion of works on March 26, 2026, via a post on X, noting an inspection had taken place. The bridge reopened to traffic on Saturday, April 11, 2026, restoring a crucial route for commuters.

Construction of the Rainbow Bridge began in 1936 and took two years. It is frequently listed among the most unusual and scary-looking bridges in the world.
