A private jet has crashed in central Mexico, killing at least seven people after the pilot attempted an emergency landing on a football pitch, authorities have confirmed.

Emergency Landing Attempt Ends in Tragedy

The fatal accident occurred on Monday, December 15, in the municipality of San Mateo Atenco. According to Mexico State Civil Protection Coordinator Adrián Hernández, the aircraft was attempting an emergency landing when it struck the metal roof of a nearby business, sparking a large fire.

The plane, which had taken off from the Pacific coastal city of Acapulco, was carrying eight passengers and two crew members. In the immediate aftermath, only seven bodies had been recovered from the wreckage, with the search for the remaining victims ongoing.

Evacuations and Fire at the Scene

The impact and subsequent blaze forced the evacuation of hundreds of people from the surrounding industrial area. San Mateo Atenco Mayor Ana Muñiz told Milenio Television that approximately 130 residents were evacuated as emergency services worked to contain the fire.

The crash site is located just three miles (5 kilometres) from Toluca airport and roughly 31 miles (50 kilometres) west of Mexico City, highlighting the proximity to a major aviation hub during the desperate landing attempt.

Investigation Underway

Mexican authorities have launched a full investigation into the causes of the devastating private jet crash. The focus will include the decision-making behind the attempted landing on the football pitch and the aircraft's condition prior to the emergency.

As recovery efforts continue, the community of San Mateo Atenco and the families of those onboard are left confronting the tragic outcome of the flight's final moments.
