A passenger plane skidded off the runway at Vilnius Airport in Lithuania on Wednesday, 26 November 2025, forcing the temporary closure of the area.
Incident Details Amidst Winter Weather
The aircraft involved was an LOT Polish Airlines flight, numbered LO771, which had originated from Warsaw. The Embraer 170 jet, carrying 63 passengers and four crew members, had just landed when it veered off the paved surface while taxiing.
Officials from Lithuanian Airports confirmed that the incident occurred during heavy snow and inclement weather. All individuals on board were safely disembarked without any injuries and were subsequently transported to the terminal building.
Context and Previous Disruptions
The Lithuanian Hydrometeorological Service had previously issued warnings to travellers about dangerous freezing temperatures. This weather-related incident follows a separate closure of Vilnius airport back in October, which authorities attributed to weather balloons linked to cigarette smuggling activities from Belarus.
The runway was closed for a period to allow for recovery and investigation efforts following the slide.
