An American Airlines flight was forced to divert to Detroit Metropolitan Wayne County Airport on Sunday afternoon after a passenger became disruptive, according to local reports.
Flight 2819, originally scheduled to travel from New York's JFK airport to Chicago O'Hare, was rerouted to Detroit, where it was met by FBI agents and airport police as per standard procedure.
Passengers were removed from the aircraft and waited in the terminal while the plane was searched “out of an abundance of caution.” The FBI confirmed in a statement that there is no threat to the public.
American Airlines expressed gratitude to customers for their patience and thanked the crew for their professionalism. The flight was rescheduled to depart from Detroit later on Sunday.
The nature of the disruption and the fate of the disruptive passenger remain unclear at this time.
