Major M54 Closure Following Serious Multi-Vehicle Collision

A significant section of the M54 motorway remains closed this morning after a serious multi-vehicle collision involving a heavy goods vehicle. The incident, which occurred near Wolverhampton, has caused major disruption for commuters and required a complex emergency service response.

Details of the Incident

The collision took place at approximately 11:40 PM on Tuesday, November 25, 2025. According to reports, a lorry was involved in an initial impact on the eastbound carriageway near junction two for Wolverhampton. The force of the collision was so severe that the HGV crossed over the central reservation, entering the opposite westbound carriageway.

Emergency services, including West Midlands Ambulance Service and West Mercia Police, were immediately dispatched to the scene. The westbound carriageway is completely shut between junction two (Wolverhampton) and junction three (Albrighton, Shropshire). Additionally, lane two of two on the eastbound carriageway is closed due to extensive barrier damage caused by the crossing lorry.

Travel Chaos and Diversion Routes

The closure has triggered significant traffic congestion across the region. National Highways has implemented a formal diversion route for westbound traffic. Motorists are being directed to exit at junction two in Wolverhampton, travel north to join the A5 road, then head west along the A5 before re-joining the motorway network via the A41.

This diversion has resulted in heavy traffic building up on these alternative routes, particularly through areas of Gailey and Weston-under-Lizard in Staffordshire. Drivers are being strongly advised to avoid the area if possible and to allow for considerable additional journey time if travel is essential.

Authorities are working to clear the scene and assess the full extent of the damage to safety barriers. There is currently no estimated time for the full reopening of the motorway. Commuters are urged to check live traffic reports for the latest updates on this ongoing incident.
