The M5 motorway in Somerset has been shut southbound following a serious collision involving a fuel tanker and a car, leading to a significant diesel spill and delays of up to three hours.

National Highways confirmed the closure between junction 22 at Edithmead and junction 23 at Puriton. The crash, which involved a heavy goods vehicle (HGV) and a car, resulted in a large diesel spill and damage to the nearside barrier.
Traffic Impact
Motorists are facing delays of approximately 150 minutes, with congestion stretching back eight miles on the approach. Drivers have been advised to plan ahead and allow extra time for their journeys.
In a statement, National Highways said: "The M5 in Somerset is closed southbound between J22 (Burnham on Sea) and J23 (Puriton) due to a serious collision involving a HGV and a car. A large diesel spill and nearside barrier damage has been confirmed as a result."
