M25 Chaos: Six-Mile Queues After Roadworks Overrun

Commuters on the M25 faced severe delays on Friday morning after overnight roadworks overran, causing queues of up to six miles. The disruption occurred on the anti-clockwise carriageway between junction 27 (M11) and junction 25 (Enfield).

National Highways confirmed that, due to unforeseen circumstances, the planned roadworks had exceeded their scheduled timeframe. A spokesperson stated: "There is no estimate for reopening." Although the roadworks have since been completed, two lanes remain closed between junctions 26 and 25 for emergency works, leading to delays of up to 80 minutes.

According to Google Maps, the traffic queue extended to 11 miles at its peak. The mapping service indicated that the roadworks were expected to finish at 11.30am, providing some timeframe despite National Highways listing the estimated restoration time as "unknown."

Frustrated motorists took to social media to voice their anger. One driver, Jimmy King, posted on X: "Are you having a laugh? Seriously disgusting, people have got work. Couldn’t organise anything, could you? Useless." Another wrote: "Just hit an hour to travel three miles. Disgraceful."

National Highways advised drivers to avoid the area if possible and allow extra time for travel. The situation remains under review as emergency works continue.
