A major train line west of Sydney has been thrown into chaos after a dramatic crash saw a car plunge from a bridge and land upside down on the tracks during the Wednesday morning rush hour.
Early Morning Crash Halts Network
Emergency services were called to St John's Road at Blaxland just after 6am on Wednesday following reports of the serious incident. The vehicle had veered off the road from a bridge, landing directly on the railway lines below.
Miraculously, both occupants inside the car managed to escape without injury. However, the wreckage caused immediate and severe disruption to the vital transport artery.
Widespread Suspensions and Commuter Advice
In response, Sydney Trains has suspended all services between Springwood and Penrith in both directions. The suspension is expected to last for most of the day as crews work to remove the damaged vehicle and assess repairs to the tracks and overhead wiring.
A spokesperson for Sydney Trains confirmed the extensive impact, stating: "Buses are replacing trains between Springwood and Emu Plains due to a vehicle on the tracks at Blaxland." They urged commuters to delay travel if possible or allow considerable extra travel time.
Ongoing Disruption and Passenger Guidance
The incident has sparked significant peak-hour chaos, with ripple effects expected across the network. Passengers are being advised to seek alternative transport and monitor official channels closely.
The train line is expected to remain closed for most of the day to facilitate the complex recovery operation and necessary repairs. A spokesman added, "Passengers should look for pre-announcements and check information screens before getting on trains."
Commuters are facing a severely disrupted journey home, with bus replacements in place but likely to be heavily congested. Authorities continue to manage the scene at Blaxland as investigations into the cause of the crash begin.
