Brit Couple's Menorca Home Overtaken by Squatters

A British couple from Kent were astonished when they arrived at their holiday home in Menorca, Spain, in June to find it occupied by squatters. The couple had been away for three months and discovered upon their return that a new alarm system had been installed and their furniture and rugs had been removed. Spanish media reported that a local father and son, aged 55 and 25, later arrived at the property claiming to live there.

Altercation and Police Involvement

An altercation ensued between the owners and the alleged squatters, leading to both parties accusing each other of assault. Police were called to the scene. According to the Majorca Daily Bulletin, Spanish police initially sided with the squatters after they produced invoices showing they had purchased the alarm system and ordered supermarket deliveries. The British couple were forced to stay in a hotel overnight.

Resolution Through Legal Documents

The following day, the couple's lawyer provided Land Registry documents and evidence confirming they were the legal owners. The father and son were identified as imposters. The couple and their legal team filed complaints of illegal occupation and theft, leading to the arrest of the two men. The owners have since moved back into their property as court proceedings continue.

Legal Challenges for Homeowners in Spain

While squatting is illegal in Spain, the legal process can be difficult for homeowners if squatters refuse to leave. Under a fast-track procedure, squatters can be removed within 48 hours if it can be proven they moved in recently. Otherwise, the process can be prolonged, as courts often require notice to be given to the occupants. Last year, British woman Joanne Venet, 61, paid £4,000 to an eviction agency to remove a tenant who refused to pay rent.
