Top 10 Retirement Destinations for Brits Seeking Sunshine

Brits can enjoy year-round sunshine and affordable living by retiring to one of the top 10 countries identified in the Retirement Abroad Index 2026. The index, compiled by Expatriate Group, evaluates 20 nations across healthcare, visa accessibility, health insurance requirements, cost of living, and community integration.

Top Retirement Destinations

The Philippines takes the top spot, offering a Special Resident Retiree's Visa with a fixed deposit requirement of roughly £11,000 for pension holders. The country excels in affordability and integration, with tranquil coastlines and captivating scenery.

Thailand ranks second, known for its rich culture and internationally accredited private healthcare in cities like Bangkok, Chiang Mai, and Phuket. It achieved a perfect 20 out of 20 on healthcare, alongside Spain and France.

Colombia secures third place with a straightforward retirement visa process and an impressive cost of living rating of 18 out of 20. A retired couple can live comfortably in Medellín on a monthly budget of £1,000 to £1,500.

European and Other Contenders

Portugal is the first European nation on the list, claiming fourth place. Sri Lanka and South Africa share joint fifth, while Malaysia and the UAE tie for sixth. Mexico holds seventh, and Spain, despite its popularity, ranks eighth due to higher living costs and visa complexity. Spain shares eighth with Indonesia, known for its relaxed lifestyle and stunning coastlines like Bali.

Panama takes ninth place, featuring its 'Pensionado' programme offering discounts and requiring a monthly lifetime income of approximately £738 plus £184 per dependant. Qatar follows closely in tenth.

Lee Gerry, director of Expatriate Group, said: "Retiring abroad has never been more achievable, but the decisions that matter most - healthcare access, visa routes, and the reality of day-to-day costs - are often the least well understood. This index is designed to cut through the noise and give people an honest, data-led picture of where the real opportunities are."

Several nations shared identical scores, meaning the top 10 actually encompasses 13 countries in total.
