Escape to Tenerife's Christmas Market for 20C Sun and Festive Fun
Tenerife's 20C Christmas Market Offers Winter Sun

For Brits dreaming of swapping winter coats for t-shirts this December, an idyllic and little-known Christmas market in Tenerife offers the perfect festive escape with temperatures soaring to a balmy 20C.

A Festive Oasis in the Winter Sun

While the climate lacks a traditional frosty backdrop, the island wholeheartedly embraces the festive spirit. The highlight is the San Cristobal de La Laguna Christmas Market, which opens its stalls on 10th December and continues right through to New Year's Eve.

Tenerife, the largest of the Canary Islands, is just a four-hour flight from the UK. During December, the island enjoys pleasant temperatures ranging from 20 to 24 degrees Celsius, providing a welcome respite from the dreary British winter. It's the ideal climate for exploring scenic walks or enjoying a relaxed pint at an outdoor café.

Discover Unique Crafts and Local Delicacies

The market itself is a treasure trove of authentic Canarian culture. Visitors can browse a myriad of artisan stalls showcasing local crafts. Look out for unique items made from volcanic stone, banana fibre, and traditional Canarian embroidery, perfect for giving your Christmas decorations a unique twist or finding a special souvenir.

For those seeking the ultimate festive memento, keep an eye out for belenes – nativity scenes that beautifully incorporate elements of the island’s dramatic landscape.

Set within the UNESCO-recognised town centre of La Laguna, with its picturesque winding streets, the market is surrounded by budget-friendly eateries. Foodies will be delighted by the classic Canarian specialties on offer, including the sweet almond dessert bienmesabe, papas arrugadas with mojo sauce, and even festive waffle ice cream. You can even enjoy a cheeky mulled wine under the warm December sun.

Soaring Popularity and Travel Options

The secret of a Canarian Christmas is getting out. Chris Hackney, CEO of Marella Cruises, confirms that Tenerife is rapidly becoming a top choice for winter sun seekers.

He revealed that the island has seen a remarkable 29% year-on-year rise in popularity as a Cruise & Stay destination. Demand for longer holidays is booming, with 10-night stays up by 69%, 11-night holidays increasing by 34%, and 14-night trips rising by 7%.

Travellers can reach Tenerife via direct flights with airlines like Ryanair, easyJet, Jet2, and British Airways. For a different experience, several cruise lines, including Marella Cruises, offer itineraries that stop in the Canaries.

A word of warning for those extending their stay: be prepared for some fun on 28th December. The island treats the day similarly to April Fools' Day, with locals and newspapers alike playing pranks on each other and unsuspecting tourists, so don't believe everything you hear!
