A historic agreement has torn down the 118-year-old border between Spain and Gibraltar, eliminating checkpoints and streamlining travel for the 9 million tourists who visit the British overseas territory each year. The deal, which took immediate effect, is expected to significantly boost summer holiday plans for Brits abroad.
Border Checks Removed After Brexit Concerns
The border had been a major source of tension since Brexit, as 96% of Gibraltar voted to remain in the European Union. Fears that leaving the EU would complicate cross-border movement have now been alleviated. Around 15,000 people—half of Gibraltar’s workforce—cross between Spain and Gibraltar daily, including tourists. The removal of lengthy visa and document requirements allows visitors to spend more time enjoying the region’s beaches and attractions.
Tourism Industry Welcomes the Change
Holiday provider Thomas Cook reported a triple-digit increase in visits to Gibraltar over the past year. Nicholas Smith, dynamic packages director at Thomas Cook, said: “Anything that makes travelling easier is good news for holidaymakers. Gibraltar is already a great base for exploring Southern Spain, and removing border checks should make it much simpler for visitors to combine the two destinations in one trip.”
Political Leaders Hail New Era
UK MP Stephen Doughty, who signed the treaty on behalf of the UK, stated: “This agreement opens a new chapter with the EU and Spain, supporting jobs, growth and prosperity on both sides of the border. This historic agreement delivers certainty for the people and businesses of Gibraltar, protects British sovereignty, our military facilities, and has the full backing of the Government and Parliament of Gibraltar.” Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez, speaking from Gibraltar, said the agreement would “usher in a new era of coexistence and shared prosperity.”
Immediate Impact on Summer Travel
The treaty came into force immediately, providing an instant boost to summer holidaymakers. With border checks removed, tourists can now seamlessly travel between Gibraltar and southern Spain, enhancing the appeal of combined trips. The agreement marks a significant step in post-Brexit relations between the UK, Gibraltar, and Spain.
