Skiing to Sweden's Highest Mountain Hut: A Whiteout Adventure

An epic rail journey from London to the Swedish Arctic culminated in a surreal skiing experience, complete with waffles for breakfast while waiting out a snowstorm. The adventure began with a 48-hour train trip, crossing the Arctic Circle near Björkliden, where the author embarked on a mini-expedition to ski to Låktatjåkko, the highest mountain hut in the Swedish Arctic.

The author, a novice at uphill skiing, received advice from veterans about the 9km route, which included a challenging final section. Equipped with skins to prevent backward movement and an avalanche alarm, the author set off following a snowplough's tracks. However, within five minutes, a whiteout reduced visibility, making it difficult to spot marker poles. The temperature dropped to -6C, and the wind strengthened, testing the author's endurance.

Despite the harsh conditions, the author reached the hut, almost buried in snow, and was welcomed by custodians Vilma and Kicki, who served waffles with cloudberry jam. The experience highlighted the beauty and challenges of skiing in the Swedish Arctic, where days are long and weather is changeable. The author reflected on the trust placed in individuals to know their limits, a hallmark of Swedish outdoor culture.
