While many Brits dream of a snowy Lapland adventure or the bright lights of London for their Christmas holidays, a hidden gem on the Devon coast offers a uniquely charming festive experience. Seaton, a quaint fishing town, bursts into life during the winter season, providing a picture-perfect escape that feels plucked straight from a Christmas card.
A Festive Programme for Everyone
The town's calendar is packed with events in the lead-up to Christmas Day. Gemma Matthews, owner of Dorset & Devon Holiday Cottages, confirms there is a diverse range of activities. "There's always plenty of events to experience," she says, highlighting everything from wreath-making workshops and pantomimes to Christmas park runs.
She also points to the excellent shopping opportunities at Seaton's independent shops, Christmas fairs, and markets. These venues provide the perfect chance to find unique gifts and sample delicious local produce, making your holiday shopping a delightful experience.
All Aboard the Polar Express Tram
For families with young children, or for those young at heart, a highlight of a Seaton Christmas is the town's very own Polar Express tram ride. This festively decorated tramcar serves passengers hot chocolate and treats before embarking on a magical journey to the 'North Pole', where riders can meet Santa and his elves.
"The tramway is a must-visit at this time of year," Gemma Matthews enthuses. "Their Polar Express ride will leave little ones in awe! Just like in the story, every guest gets to take home a silver sleigh bell, which is such a lovely memory of Seaton to look back on in years to come."
A Fairytale Illumination
The festive atmosphere reaches its peak with the annual illumination of the Christmas lights. This key event is scheduled for November 30 at 5:30pm. According to Gemma, the lighting ceremony transforms the entire town into a scene resembling a fairytale, an image that truly lives up to the description of being straight from a Christmas card.
She adds that while Seaton is quieter in the winter compared to the bustling summer months, this only enhances its cosy, small-town charm. It offers a tranquil and much-needed escape from the crowded city markets and typical festive tourist hotspots, providing a more relaxed and intimate holiday setting.
With its enchanting light displays, festive workshops, magical tram ride, and welcoming community, Seaton in Devon establishes itself as a must-visit destination for anyone seeking an authentic and charming British Christmas.
