Holiday Bookings Surge 46% on Christmas Day, Says Haven
Record Christmas Day holiday bookings surge for Haven

The traditional quiet of Christmas Day is being replaced by a new holiday planning ritual, according to one of the UK's leading staycation operators. Haven, which operates 38 seaside parks, has reported a dramatic shift in consumer behaviour, with a significant surge in advanced bookings taken on December 25th.

From Turkey to Travel Plans

Gone are the days when December 25th was solely for presents and festive feasting. Haven has identified an emerging trend of families using the day to organise their future holidays. Historically a quiet period for the travel industry, Christmas Day has seen bookings increase steadily in recent years, culminating in a 46% leap last year. While the firm hasn't released exact figures, company bosses confirmed this equated to hundreds of bookings taken on the day itself.

Simon Palethorpe, Haven's chief executive, explained the phenomenon. "Once the presents are unwrapped, carols sung and turkey stripped, more families are using their time together to book their Easter and summer holidays," he said. He also highlighted a practical benefit, noting that booking early with Haven can result in significant savings compared to those who leave it until later.

The Festive Booking Window

The booking frenzy isn't confined to Christmas Day. Boxing Day has also become a peak time for holiday planning, with Haven reporting a 28% increase in bookings on December 26th last year. The company now anticipates taking thousands of bookings across these two key festive days this year, bracing for another record-breaking period.

This early festive activity is reshaping the traditional travel industry calendar, which usually expects a major spike in bookings just after the New Year. The peak is still anticipated on January 3rd, known in the trade as 'Sunshine Saturday'. Research from travel association ABTA ahead of 2025's key date suggested that 68% of people were planning a trip abroad, with 45% looking to visit a new country.

Expert Advice for Savvy Bookers

While the urge to secure a deal is strong, consumer experts urge caution. Trade specialists at Which? have issued guidance for those planning their holidays during this busy period. They advise shoppers not to feel pressured by time-limited offers and to always shop around to ensure they are getting the right holiday at the best price.

The warning also extends to potential scams. Holiday booking fraud is common at this time of year, with dodgy social media deals and fake listings on legitimate sites. Which? recommends always being wary of deals that seem too good to be true and avoiding any listings that request payment by bank transfer. A simple reverse image search on villa or rental photos can also help verify their authenticity.

As the dark winter months encourage dreams of summer sun, it's clear that for many UK families, the festive season has become the perfect time to plan their next great escape.
