In a shocking incident at a popular Brazilian tourist destination, at least ten people have sustained injuries following a piranha attack. The violent episode unfolded in the Paraguacu River, located within the municipality of Iacu in the northeastern state of Bahia.
Tourist Hotspot Turns into Scene of Horror
The attack occurred as visitors were cooling off in the river, a site that typically draws thousands of tourists seeking respite from the heat. Disturbing photographs from the scene depicted victims with blood-soaked bandages wrapped around wounds primarily concentrated on their feet, evidence of the piranhas' aggressive feeding behaviour.
Immediate Closure and Official Response
In response to the Sunday attacks, local authorities have taken decisive action. Town hall officials have announced the immediate closure of that stretch of the river to swimmers. Warning signs alerting the public to the danger posed by piranhas are also being erected.
Furthermore, a technical study has been commissioned to investigate the cause of these piranha attacks in the area, which are causing significant concern for public safety.
Riverside Business Reacts
A kiosk operating by the riverside, which sells refreshments and snacks, issued a statement detailing its response. "When the first incidents involving attacks on bathers started occurring we assisted them and directed them to the nearest health centre," the statement read.
The business also took proactive measures to warn its customers. "We also informed all the customers who were under parasols we had hired or in the water about the dangers of remaining in the river. We closed up early due to what happened."
As a precaution, the kiosk has decided to temporarily suspend its sunshade rental service until more information is available regarding the triggers for these unusual and dangerous attacks.
The incident has cast a shadow over the popular tourist spot, raising urgent questions about wildlife management and visitor safety in Brazil's natural attractions.
