Lightwater Valley Sold Again: Mellors Group Buys Yorkshire Theme Park for £3m
Mellors Group Buys Lightwater Valley Theme Park

Lightwater Valley, the historic theme park nestled in the North Yorkshire countryside, has changed hands once again, marking a new chapter in its 55-year history. The Mellors Group, which also owns Skegness Pier, has purchased the attraction for £3 million, a sum £2 million less than its previous sale price in 2021.

From Thrill-Seeker Haven to Family Focus

Founded in 1969 near the city of Ripon, Lightwater Valley's reputation was built on formidable thrill rides. It was once home to The Ultimate, which held the title of the world's longest roller coaster until 2001. Alongside other iconic attractions like the Raptor Attack and the Eagles Claw, it drew adrenaline-seekers for decades.

However, the park's fortunes shifted. After being sold to The Brighton Pier Group for £5 million in June 2021, its strategy pivoted towards younger families. The legendary Ultimate was dismantled in 2019, and many older thrill rides were retired to make way for gentler attractions aimed at children under 12.

New Owners Promise a Renaissance

In a press release dated December 6, the new owners expressed their personal connection and ambitious vision. "Lightwater Valley holds a special place in the hearts of many families across the UK, including the Mellors family, who visited the park often as children," the statement read.

James Mellors, Managing Director of Mellors Group, stated: "Our goal is simple: to put the park back 'on the map' as a major theme park, by introducing new rides, injecting new energy, and creating something truly special for families for many years to come." The group has pledged significant new investment, with new rides and attractions slated to debut in 2026.

Enthusiasts React and a Pier's Parallel Story

The sale has sparked lively discussion among theme park fans online. On social media, many nostalgically called for the return of classic 1990s rides, while others hoped for more immersive theming and thrilling options even for younger visitors.

The sale coincides with challenges for the previous owner, the Brighton Pier Group, which has also put Brighton's iconic Palace Pier up for sale. That seaside attraction has faced declining visitors and difficult trading conditions, with its value written down amid a poor summer season in 2024.

Spanning 175 acres, Lightwater Valley currently operates around 35 rides. While it will continue to cater to young families, the Mellors Group aims to broaden its appeal to all ages, creating an experience the whole family can enjoy together and writing the next act in this British leisure institution's story.
