McDonald's recently hosted an exclusive launch event in London, showcasing a 'secret, secret' menu that the British public has never tasted. As a food critic, I was invited to sample these hidden creations, which are not available in any UK or Ireland branch.
The event was held in a pop-up location with strict security. Guests had to provide a password and follow entry requirements before being allowed inside. The venue was dimly lit with stage lighting, and a DJ set played while attendees enjoyed alcoholic or non-alcoholic drinks.
The menu consisted of four items: a double cheeseburger, nuggets, hash browns, and an Oreo McFlurry. Guests assembled their own creations. The first was a double cheeseburger stuffed with nuggets and barbecue sauce. Surprisingly, it was tasty, with the nuggets adding a meatier texture and crispier coating than the standard chicken cheeseburger.
The second creation was a hash brown sandwich filled with ice cream. This was more unusual, and since hash browns are only available in the morning, it felt exclusive. The sweet and savoury combination was not unwelcome, though the ice cream made the potato soggy if not eaten quickly.
Overall, the secret menu did not live up to the hype. The publicly available items are far better than these hidden creations. While not terrible, I wouldn't rush to order them again.
