New York's Thanksgiving Spectacle Prepares for Chilly Start
The beloved Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade is set to transform the streets of Manhattan today, bringing its traditional blend of giant balloons, extravagant floats, and star-studded performances to herald the start of the holiday season. This year's procession promises fresh attractions including new balloons depicting Buzz Lightyear and Pac-Man, alongside floats featuring popular characters Labubu and Lego.
Parade Route and Weather Considerations
The parade is scheduled to commence at 8:30 a.m. EST, regardless of weather conditions, beginning on Manhattan's Upper West Side and concluding at the iconic Macy's Herald Square flagship store on 34th Street. Meteorologist David Stark from the National Weather Service in New York forecasts a chilly day with temperatures in the 40s, though significant wind gusts between 25 mph (40 kph) and 30 mph (48 kph) will make it feel considerably colder.
City officials are monitoring conditions closely, as local regulations prohibit Macy's from flying full-size balloons if sustained winds exceed 23 mph (37 kph) or gusts surpass 35 mph (56 kph). Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch confirmed that authorities will make a final decision on any necessary balloon adjustments on Thursday morning. Historically, weather has grounded the balloons only once, back in 1971.
Security Measures and Star-Studded Lineup
Commissioner Tisch addressed security concerns at a Wednesday news conference, stating that while there are no known, specific, credible threats to the event, thousands of police officers will be stationed along the route as a standard precaution. The parade has attracted protests in recent years, including pro-Palestinian demonstrators who entered the parade route, and police confirm they are prepared to address any similar situations.
The entertainment lineup features an impressive roster of performers, including Cynthia Erivo from "Wicked," Conan Gray, Lainey Wilson, Foreigner, and Lil Jon. The parade will also showcase talents from the Netflix hit "KPop Demon Hunters," featuring Audrey Nuna, EJAE and Rei Ami. Traditional favourites like the Radio City Rockettes and cast members from Broadway productions including "Buena Vista Social Club," "Just in Time," and "Ragtime" will also perform.
Among the new balloon creations captivating spectators will be a large onion carriage featuring eight characters from the world of "Shrek", while the "KPop Demon Hunters" will be represented in the sky by characters Derpy Tiger and Sussie. The procession will feature dozens of balloons, floats, clown groups, and marching bands, all culminating in the traditional arrival of Santa Claus.
How to Watch the Festivities
For those unable to brave the New York chill, the parade will be broadcast live on NBC, hosted by Savannah Guthrie and Al Roker from "Today" alongside their former colleague Hoda Kotb. Spanish-language coverage will air on Telemundo, hosted by Andrea Meza, Aleyda Ortiz and Clovis Nienow. The event is also being simulcast on NBC's Peacock streaming service, ensuring viewers nationwide can enjoy the Thanksgiving tradition.
