Sydney Nightlife Booms as Justin Hemmes' Club Rose Bay Draws Huge Crowds
Hemmes' Club Rose Bay Launch Draws Huge Sydney Crowds

Sydney's weekend nightlife witnessed a remarkable resurgence as enormous crowds descended upon the affluent suburb of Rose Bay for the grand opening of billionaire Justin Hemmes' latest venue, Club Rose Bay.

A Spectacular Launch and an Unexpected Crowd

On Saturday night, social media footage captured an electric atmosphere with queues stretching down the street. The iconic RSL venue was packed to capacity with eager patrons. The viral clip was tellingly captioned, noting that while an older demographic was anticipated, "every young eastern suburbs Merivale lover has swarmed the joint."

The celebrations were a true display of Merivale's signature style. Hemmes, 53, and his girlfriend Madeline Holtznagel, 28, marked the occasion by unveiling a lavish new $1 million speedboat on Sydney Harbour. The couple cut contrasting yet chic figures; Justin in a monochrome black jacket and jeans, while Madeline radiated in an all-white tracksuit, accessorised with designer heels and sunglasses.

More Than a Launch: A Vision for Sydney's Future

This launch is not an isolated event but part of Hemmes' broader ambition to revitalise Sydney's after-dark economy. In October last year, he revealed ambitious plans to transform five heritage buildings in the city's CBD into a major interconnected hospitality precinct.

The proposed development, covering 16,300 square metres on the block bounded by King, York, Clarence and Barrack streets, aims to include a new hotel, office spaces, and fine dining. Crucially, the plans involve maintaining the buildings' heritage features without major reconstruction.

Poised for a New Era

Hemmes believes Sydney is on the cusp of a recovery. After years hampered by lockout laws, COVID-19 lockdowns, and the cost-of-living crisis, he stated the city is ready for a "new and exciting era for hospitality and entertainment."

His vision for the CBD precinct is to stimulate a 24-hour economy, offering more choice in food, drink, and entertainment for residents and workers alike, while creating hundreds of new jobs. The overwhelming success of Club Rose Bay's opening weekend suggests the public appetite for such a revival is stronger than ever.
