A Family Weekend in Chepstow: Castles, Coastal Paths and Cottage Comfort
Family Weekend in Chepstow: Castles and Coastal Walks

After a three-hour car journey from London, filled with snack consumption and the inevitable loss of jigsaw pieces at Leigh Delamere services, our family arrives in the village of Mathern, near Chepstow in South Wales. Travelling with two children, the scenic drive sets the tone for a weekend escape focused on history, nature, and relaxation.

Accommodation at The Gatehouse

We check into The Gatehouse, a newly renovated cottage on the Mathern Palace Estate. This property proves ideal for a multi-generational stay, as the grandparents have already arrived. With three en-suite bedrooms, it offers comfort and privacy for all. Rates start from £310 per night, and bookings can be made via mathernpalaceestate.com.

Exploring Chepstow's Medieval Heritage

On Saturday morning, we visit the pretty town of Chepstow, once home to some of the most influential figures of the medieval and Tudor periods. Its castle, one of the oldest stone fortresses in Britain, is well worth the £10 entry fee. Even the children are impressed by the imposing structure and its historical significance.

Chepstow itself is a charming contrast, with colourful little houses and small shops nestled alongside the massive castle. We stop at Coffee Addition for a restorative lunch of soup and sourdough, a bargain at £4.95, before continuing our explorations.

Walking the Wales Coastal Path

From The Gatehouse, it is a short stroll to join the Wales Coastal Path. In Chepstow, this path meets the Offa’s Dyke Path, offering a continuous route around the entire country. We manage to cover about two of the available 870 scenic miles, enjoying breathtaking views and fresh air.

Relaxation and Evening Escapes

Back at the cottage, the hot tub provides a relaxing experience under the stars, though it quickly turns into a splash zone with a manic six-year-old. Nevertheless, Granny and Grandpa seem to enjoy a dip with my daughter, adding to the family fun.

After preparing dinner in the cottage's beautifully designed kitchen, featuring swish, Shaker-style units, my husband and I escape to the local pub. The Millers Arms is cosy, welcoming, and conveniently just a seven-minute walk away, perfect for a quiet evening out.

Historic Tintern Abbey and Riverside Lunch

On Sunday, we visit Tintern Abbey, a ruin dating back to 1131 that is not to be missed. As a premier destination for Romantic pilgrimages, it inspired Wordsworth’s poetry and JMW Turner’s famous painting. Today, it remains equally awe-inspiring, with entry priced at £9.

We then walk a few minutes along the River Wye to reach The Royal George, established in 1598. This recently renovated pub and hotel is ideal for a hearty lunch before the drive home. Chargrilled king prawns and steaks are particularly popular, providing a satisfying end to our weekend adventure.
