Nestled at the foot of the famous Box Hill in Surrey lies the charming market town of Dorking, a destination celebrated for its picturesque high street and wealth of independent retailers. A recent winter visit revealed a thriving hub of quaint antique shops, beauty boutiques, and cosy cafes, all set against a backdrop of rolling hills and breathtaking countryside vistas.
A High Street Brimming with Character
While the National Trust beauty spot of Box Hill has long been a draw for walkers and cyclists tackling its zig zag route, Dorking's own high street offers a different kind of allure. The thoroughfare is a delightful mix of independent stores, each adding to the town's unique character. During a stroll, visitors can find everything from artisan treasures to perfect spots for a warming coffee, all while enjoying striking views of the surrounding Surrey landscape.
New Salon Boosts Local Economy
Adding to the town's appeal, the award-winning hair salon group Rush Hair opened a new branch in the centre of Dorking at the end of last year, just in time for Christmas. Occupying a prominent position at a crossroads, the salon has created 10 new jobs for aspiring stylists in the area.
The chic interior, designed by Dudley Cummings of the Rush salon design team, features eight styling stations, contemporary grey stone flooring, and unique fixtures. Enhanced with LED lighting for precision colour work and adorned with artwork from the Rush creative team, the space is designed as a relaxing haven. Stell Andrew, CEO and co-founder of Rush Hair, stated the new salon looks "truly incredible" and will be an asset to Dorking.
Clients enjoying their 'me-time' are treated to complimentary teas, coffees, and biscuits. The salon is also promoting its services with colour appointments currently offered at half price when booked with a cut and finish.
Cosy Cafes and a Glorious Sunset
For those looking to explore further, the high street is within easy walking distance of numerous lovely cafes. Directly opposite the new Rush salon sits the popular Cosy Moose, an artisan coffee shop and bakery. On a cold winter's day, its windows were charmingly steamed up, hinting at the warm and bustling atmosphere inside. It's a perfect, if compact, spot to enjoy a homemade slice of carrot cake or a pecan tart.
The exploration of Dorking's independent offerings culminated in a spectacular natural display: at around 4pm, a glorious sunset painted the sky over the town's rooftops, a fitting end to a visit. For visitors driving in, South Street Car Park offers a convenient and close-by parking option with payment available via the Ringo app.
Dorking proves itself to be more than just a gateway to Box Hill. It is a destination in its own right, where a vibrant high street of independent businesses, new investments, and stunning natural beauty combine to create a truly delightful English market town experience.
