Dorking's High Street: Independent Shops & New Salon

Nestled at the foot of the famous Box Hill in Surrey lies the charming market town of Dorking, a destination celebrated for its picturesque high street brimming with independent retailers. This winter, a visit revealed its enduring appeal, from quaint antique shops and beauty boutiques to cosy cafes, all set against a backdrop of stunning rolling countryside.

A High Street Haven of Independent Charm

Dorking's primary thoroughfare offers a refreshing alternative to generic shopping centres. The street is lined with a diverse array of independent stores, each adding to the town's unique character. During a recent exploration, the vibrant mix of businesses was evident, providing everything from speciality goods to personal pampering. The experience is enhanced by striking views of the surrounding Surrey Hills, making a simple shopping trip feel like a scenic escape.

New Salon Adds Glamour and Jobs

Adding to the high street's allure is the recent arrival of an award-winning business. In December 2025, the Rush Hair salon group opened a new branch in a prominent central location at a crossroads. The salon's chic interior, designed by Rush's Dudley Cummings, features eight styling stations, contemporary grey stone flooring, and unique fixtures. The opening has created 10 new jobs for local stylists.

Enhanced with LED lighting and artwork from the Rush creative team, the space offers a relaxed, welcoming environment. CEO and co-founder Stell Andrew described it as "an asset to Dorking and a fabulous haven for clients to come to relax and have a pamper." To celebrate the launch, the salon is offering colour appointments at half price when booked with a cut and finish. Clients can also enjoy complimentary teas, coffees, and biscuits during their visit.

Cosy Cafes and a Perfect Winter Sunset

Beyond the salon, Dorking's high street is well-served for refreshments. Directly opposite Rush Hair sits the artisan Cosy Moose coffee shop and bakery, a popular spot with steamed-up windows on cold days. While compact, it's the perfect place to enjoy a homemade slice of carrot cake or pecan tart. For those preferring a familiar chain, Costa Coffee is located right next door to the new salon.

The town also proves to be a beautiful setting for a winter afternoon. As dusk approaches, the rooftops of Dorking's pretty homes provide a spectacular vantage point for glorious sunsets, painting the sky in vibrant hues. For visitors driving in, South Street Car Park is a convenient option, located close to the high street and offering payment via the Ringo app.

With its blend of independent retail, new business investment, natural beauty, and easy access to the walking and cycling trails of Box Hill, Dorking presents a compelling and delightful destination for a day out in Surrey.
