Tyne Cruises has launched its new vessel, the Canny Lass, on the River Tyne in Newcastle, offering three different trips for passengers. The public sailings begin this Friday, August 14, marking the return of cruises to the Tyne after nearly seven years.
Maiden Voyage in Glorious Weather
The maiden voyage took place on Tuesday in bright sunshine and calm waters, with temperatures creeping past 20 degrees. Invited guests, including the Mayor of Newcastle, Councillor Henry Gallagher, who cut the ribbon on launch day, enjoyed a sun-drenched journey down the Tyne.
The Canny Lass comes with its own bar, indoor and outdoor seating, and is available for private functions. An on-board tour guide provides live commentary along the route.
Three Cruise Options
Tyne Cruises offers three different trips. The first passengers enjoyed a one-hour city cruise, which took them down to Dunston Staithes and back past the river's famous bridges, along the Quayside, and up to Ouseburn.
Each journey offers a different vantage point for photo opportunities of local landmarks such as the Baltic and Glasshouse. The route includes views of the Millennium Bridge, the Swing Bridge, and the Tyne Bridge.
Team Behind the Return
The cruises were brought back to Tyneside by the team at Tyne Cruises, including directors Geoff Moore, Steffi Schofield, Neil Schofield, and Tom Leyland. They were joined by Stephen Patterson, Chief Executive at Newcastle NE1, on launch day.
The Canny Lass set sail from NE1's Newcastle City Marina, with passers-by coming out to watch the first trip. Captain Mark Taylor was at the helm for the vessel's first journey down the Tyne.
