A relaxing holiday to the white isle of Ibiza turned to tragedy for a group of British tourists after their taxi veered off a notorious road and plunged down a 90-foot ravine.
The devastating incident, which occurred on the perilous Sa Cala road in the popular area of Sant Antoni, has claimed the life of one UK national and left three others in a critical condition in hospital.
Emergency services scrambled to the scene following the horrifying crash on Wednesday afternoon. A major rescue operation was launched, involving local police, fire crews, and multiple ambulance units.
Shocking Scene
First responders were met with a scene of chaos as the mangled wreckage of the black taxi was discovered at the bottom of the steep cliffside drop. The vehicle had reportedly smashed through a safety barrier before its terrifying descent.
Paramedics worked tirelessly at the scene to treat the seriously injured victims. Tragically, one of the British tourists was pronounced dead shortly after the crash.
The three surviving tourists were rushed to nearby Can Misses Hospital, where they remain in a critical but stable condition. The driver of the taxi, a local Spaniard, was also injured and received treatment.
Notorious Road
The Sa Cala road is infamous among locals and regular visitors to Ibiza. Its tight, winding bends and dramatic cliff-edge drops have been the site of numerous accidents over the years, leading to calls for improved safety measures.
An investigation into the exact cause of the crash is now underway by the Guardia Civil. Officers are working to determine if speed, a mechanical fault, or another factor led to the vehicle leaving the road.
The Foreign Office has confirmed it is in contact with local authorities and is providing support to the families of those affected. A spokesperson said, "We are supporting the family of a British man who has died in Spain and are in contact with the local authorities."
This tragic event has sent shockwaves through the British expat community and holidaymakers on the island, casting a shadow over what is typically one of Ibiza's busiest tourist periods.
