A British man who suffered severe injuries in a moped accident in Thailand is showing 'remarkable' progress, according to his girlfriend. Zak Forsyth, 21, from Huyton, Merseyside, remains in a coma in intensive care after the collision earlier this month.
His girlfriend Amy Elkin, 21, who flew to Thailand on February 9, provided an update on a crowdfunding page. She said treatment has successfully reduced swelling on his brain and medication is converting blood clots into fluid. 'Zak's progress has been remarkable, especially considering how close we came to losing him,' she wrote.
Zak sustained severe facial injuries, including multiple fractures to his eye sockets, cheekbones, jaw and nose. He has undergone complete facial reconstruction surgery with metal plates fitted, and his jaw has been wired shut to aid healing. He has also had a tracheotomy and is now breathing independently after being on a ventilator.
However, Amy warned that his condition could still change depending on how his brain responds. 'Zak is in significant pain and is receiving very strong medication,' she said. The couple did not have travel insurance, leaving the family facing mounting medical bills. 'Nothing is provided free of charge. We are struggling with the ongoing medical costs,' Amy added.
Zak was sober and riding a scooter when it collided with a vehicle. The motorist took him to hospital. The British Embassy confirmed his identity, and police visited the family home in the UK. A JustGiving page has been set up to help cover expenses.
